knowledge discovery: A Stock Market and the Economy Game
about etf colors
ETFcolors.com is a Stock Market and the Economy Game that contains a sample of the Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) Universe. The “Game” includes seventy-eight (78) ETFs: Bonds, Currencies, Commodities, Stock Markets Around the World, US Stock Market Sectors, and Inverse Products.
Total ETF Assets under management is around $13 trillion. ETFs are financial asset systems that change with time. These changes are a function of information or events. Expectations are associated with the information. Information that misses, meets, beats or surprises based on expectations may result in a
change in behavior of the ETF.
Currently, one way to observe a change in behavior of an ETF is by viewing time-series graphs (a sequence of prices over time). Time-series graphs are considered High Dimensional Complex Data, therefore challenging to interpret a possible change in direction.
- ETFcolors.com is designed to observe these changes in behavior in a different way.
- ETFcolors.com projects time-series data to Low Dimensional Sub-space or Color-Coded Representations
Why would this help to better detect possible changes in direction of an ETF? Remember the saying “Buy Low and Sell High?”
Using Color-Coded Representations can help with “Knowledge Discovery” or therefore challenging our cognitive built-in bias of actually “Buying High and Selling Low.”
In the game, “Low” is represented by “Orange” or “Yellow” Colors and “High” is represented by “Green” and “Blue” Colors. Check out the Market Trend Colors page for a visual representation of each color.

New POWERPOINT PRESENTATION each Week
Each week the time-series behavior of the 78 ETF’s is projected into Color-Coded Representations and the results are populated on an excel spreadsheet. A Power Point Presentation (PPP) is generated with thirteen (13) spreadsheets through time. The Presentation is controlled manually by the Gamer in time sequence. Possible changes in direction of ETFs can be observed. This approach makes it less challenging to detect Change in Direction – Like viewing a Weather Forecast. The only Constant is Change. So just view the Weekly Spread Sheets and look for ETFs changing from “Orange” to “Yellow” to “Green” to “Blue”.
